Marco ARCIERI

Dr. Marco Arcieri is the President of ICID and Secretary General of the Italian National Committee (ITAL-ICID). He is an Officer of the Ministry of Environment-River Basin District Authority of Southern Italy, responsible for water resources management, soil erosion and flood prevention, drought prediction and preparedness. In his professional career, spanning over 30 years, he has contributed to various research studies on water resources management in agriculture, irrigation and drainage development, action plans against desertification.

With his wide expertise he has visited more than 50 countries worldwide, in order to implement research projects and to attend International Conferences, Workshops and UN Meetings, both as a key note speaker and/or as an invited guest. He holds an International PhD on Crop Systems, Forestry and Environmental Sciences. During his scientific activity he has published several publications for peer reviewed Journals, related to innovative irrigation techniques, environmentally sustainable agriculture, climate change, drought preparedness and fight against desertification. On behalf of ICID, he’s a member of the UN FAO Program WASAG - GLOBAL FRAMEWORK ON WATER SCARCITY and is a Permanent Observer to UN Agencies FAO, IFAD and WMO.

Pedro SIMÓN


Mr. Pedro Simon Andreu is an Industrial engineer with more than 34 years of experience in water management, specially in wastewater treatment, both in the private and public sectors holding  positions of high responsability. Currently he is Technical Director in ESAMUR, regional public company responsible of wastewater treatment system in Murcia Region with the highest percentage of water reuse in Europe. He is coordinator on water reuse in DAQUAS  and he has participated in many european research projects and scientific articles.

Ignacio GÓMEZ

Ignacio Gómez Lucena, FPU pre-doctoral researcher in the area of Hydraulic Engineering and Irrigation (Department of Agronomy) at the University of Córdoba. His thesis takes a multidisciplinary approach to the use of reclaimed water for agricultural irrigation, focusing on the quality of reclaimed water, its impact on soils and crops, and an analysis of the regulatory framework governing its use.  Teaching experience in Agricultural Engineering, Civil Engineering and Mining Engineering degrees (subjects: Hydraulics, Hydrology and Irrigation, Hydraulic Works and Installations, Water Resource Planning and Management). Advanced course - Reuse of wastewater in agriculture (CIHEAM Zaragoza). Participation in projects focused on the sustainable use of reclaimed water for agricultural irrigation: I-ReWater, Reutivar 2.0, HAGRO.

Roula KHADRA

Dr. Roula Khadra is the Science Coordinator and International Officer at CIHEAM Bari. She holds degrees in Rural Engineering, Land and Water Resources Management, and Mediterranean Agriculture, and completed a Fulbright Post Doctoral Fellowship at the University of California, Davis.

With over two decades of experience, her work focuses on water quality, water reuse, sustainable irrigation, and agricultural innovation, with major contributions to strategic irrigation programs and sustainable water governance across the Mediterranean.

She serves in leadership roles within several organizations, including as an elected Governor of the Arab Water Council Board of Delegates. At CIHEAM Bari, she heads the Integrated Resource Management Unit, leads international research and cooperation programs, directs academic initiatives including the Master in Sustainable Water and Land Management, and founded the Digital Agriculture Lab, advancing regional capacity building, youth engagement, and science diplomacy.

Popi KARAOLIA

Popi Karaolia is a senior post-doctoral researcher at the Nireas-International Water Research Center (Nireas-IWRC) of the University of Cyprus and a consultant for the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) on wastewater surveillance. 

Her research expertise and focus lie in the development and application of methods and protocols for the detection and enumeration of human health-related biomarkers such as pathogenic bacteria, viruses and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) determinants in raw and treated wastewater.

She also has expertise in the determination of the presence of various contaminants of emerging concern such as antibiotics and antibiotic resistance determinants before, during and after wastewater treatment processes, including biological and advanced chemical oxidation treatment processes. 
She currently works on integrating and elevating wastewater surveillance within public health frameworks, with her work supporting the development of early-warning systems, health and environmental risk assessment on AMR, and policy development.

Magali GERINO

Magali GERINO is now a full professor in environmental sciences at the Center for Biodiversity and Environment Research. In 1995 she was hired at Toulouse Univ. after a Ph-D and postdoc in oceanography. She received 1st Rech. internat Prize from Convergence in 2018 for bioinspired constructed wetlands. Magali is president of the Natural Heritage Scientific Council of Occitania, author of 61 articles, 7 chapters, 75 conferences and 1 patent. She is now in charge of several REUSE demonstrator for the promotion of nature based solutions for water treatment, and the scientific leader of the European SOLLAGUA project.

Amélie BRESSON

Jérôme HARMAND

Jérôme Harmand is a researcher at the INRAE Environmental Biotechnology Laboratory in Narbonne. 

His work focuses on the development of automatic methods for modeling and optimization applied to biological and environmental systems, with a particular interest in microbial ecosystems, bioprocesses, and the reuse of treated wastewater (REUT/REUSE) from a circular economy perspective.His scientific approach is based on a multi-scale analysis of systems, from microbial populations to material and water treatment and recovery processes 
involving several interconnected treatment systems. It aims to better understand, design, and control complex systems subject to significant biological, technological, environmental, and regulatory constraints.

He is the author of more than 120 papers published in international journal and 5 book chapters.
He is the chair of the French INRAE network on REUSE and of the international Water4Reuse COST action.

Eider DE LA CRUZ

Eider de la Cruz is an R&D Project Coordinator at Zubigune Fundazioa, with more than 14 years of experience in project organisation and management, particularly in European and international cooperation projects.

Throughout her career, she was worked as an international project coordinator, taking responsibility for financial and administrative management, reporting, project management tasks, team coordination, partner search and engagement, as well as supporting the overall project design, proposal writing and negotiation phases. She also has extensive experience in monitoring funding programmes and identifying public funding opportunities at European, National and Regional levels.

Her work focuses on the development of R&D projects and knowledge transfer initiatives, mainly through specialisation programmes with countries such as Chile, Mexico and Argentina, as well as European and cross-border projects. She has been involved in programmes such as SUDOE, POCTEFA, Eurorégion, Erasmus and Horizon 2020, and in International initiatives including Capacitación sin Fronteras and Técnicos para Chile.

The projects she has contributed to are linked to renewable energies, energy efficiency in buildings, circular bioeconomy, aquaponics, and other transversal innovation areas. She has a solid background in project management and European funding.

Javier J. CANCELA

Javier J. Cancela is an Associate Professor at the Agroforestry Department (University of Santiago de Compostela) in the PROePLA research group. He completed his PhD studies in Agronomy at the University of Santiago de Compostela (2004). The study of water management has been the main line of research since the beginning of his career in 2000, directly related to his PhD thesis defended in 2004: Integrated Water Management in the upper Miño River basin. From then, continuity was given to the line of research on irrigation management and determination of crop water requirements, for which several post-doctoral stays were carried out at the Instituto Superior de Agronomía in Lisbon.

Actually, he led the project: I-ReWater (Interreg SUDOE), focus on the Use of reclaimed water in the irrigated crops. He has published more than 30 papers in various journals, and serves as a Vice President of AERYD, as well as main research of several national and autonomous projects.
